General Labor Confederation President Bechara Al-Asmar said discussions on raising the minimum wage are ongoing in coordination with economic bodies and the labor minister. A broader meeting is scheduled for Friday at the Confederation’s headquarters to discuss the issue and work toward a mutually agreed formula.
Speaking in an interview, Al-Asmar said the negotiations take into account workers’ need for higher wages amid soaring living costs and declining purchasing power, while also considering the difficult economic conditions facing the industrial, agricultural, commercial, tourism and restaurant sectors.
Al-Asmar said raising the minimum wage would also have a positive impact on benefits provided by the National Social Security Fund and end-of-service indemnities. He added that the final figure remains under discussion, with a new minimum wage expected to be approved before the end of the year. Talks are also underway to address certain wage supplements.
