MP Qassem Hashem said that based on experience, the meetings held so far have yielded no results, and Lebanon has not been able to secure anything, not even a show of good faith from either the US mediator or the Israeli side under the framework agreement.
Speaking to Sawt Kol Lebnan, he said: We are waiting, but we are not placing much hope in the rounds of negotiations because the Israeli side is pursuing its own interests. Anyone following its positions at both the political and military levels cannot feel reassured or expect positive developments; quite the opposite.
Regarding reports of new pilot areas, particularly in Nabatieh, Hashem said: If the first trial in Zawtar Al-Gharbiya was not even among the occupied areas to begin with, then there can certainly be no basis for relying on what Israel promises.
He said: Had Lebanon remained committed to the proposal put forward by President Nabih Berri to designate the four districts as pilot areas, we would today be at a different stage in the withdrawal process. But the continuation of Israel’s current policies and its persistent policy of delay are aimed at prolonging the occupation.
