Qabalan Calls for Saudi-Iran Deal to Shield Lebanon From Regional Tensions

  • Wed May 27 2026 10:20 am

In his Eid al-Adha message, Jaafari Mufti Ahmad Qabalan said the Middle East is witnessing major political and military shifts, claiming that the US-backed Israeli confrontation with Iran had failed, while Hezbollah had succeeded in holding its ground along Lebanon’s southern border.

Qabalan stressed that Lebanon must prioritize national unity and avoid internal conflict, warning against political and sectarian divisions at a time of heightened regional instability. He criticized Lebanese authorities for what he described as concessions to Washington and indirect negotiations tied to Tel Aviv, while praising the resistance for defending the country’s sovereignty.

He argued that Lebanon’s security and territorial integrity depend on both the resistance and the Lebanese Army, cautioning that any effort to weaken either side or involve the army in foreign-backed agendas could destabilize the country.

Addressing Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Qabalan urged him to act as a unifying leader capable of preserving Lebanon’s internal cohesion during a volatile period in the region.

He also commended Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, describing him as a key figure in maintaining dialogue and protecting national stability.

Qabalan concluded by calling for a Saudi-Iranian understanding, saying such a settlement is essential to easing tensions in Lebanon and the wider region and preventing further escalation driven by outside powers.
