Hezbollah: The state must move beyond the position of a helpless bystander

  • Tue April 22 2025 3:27 pm

Hezbollah condemned the assassination of Sheikh Hussein Atwe, a senior figure in the Islamic Group, who was targeted on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, by an Israeli drone strike while driving on the Baaouerta road near Damour, south of Beirut.

Hezbollah’s Head of Islamic Relations, Sheikh Abdul Majid Ammar, issued the following statement:

“We strongly condemn the treacherous and cowardly crime committed by the Israeli enemy in assassinating Sheikh Hussein Attoui, a leader in the Islamic Group. This act is yet another expression of the enemy’s continued arrogance, violation of Lebanese sovereignty, and targeting of the resistance in all its forms. It is further proof that the resistance is unified, and the enemy is one and the same.”

On behalf of Hezbollah, Sheikh Ammar extended heartfelt condolences and congratulations to the Islamic Group and the family of the martyr, asking God Almighty to grant him mercy among the martyrs and the righteous.

He continued:

“The enemy’s persistence in its crimes, under blatant American cover and encouragement, is a direct result of the failure of those sponsoring the ceasefire agreement and the international community’s negligence in fulfilling its responsibilities. This emboldens the enemy to continue its brutal aggression without deterrence.”

He added:

“This ongoing aggression, including today’s strike in the southern town of Hanniyeh, which resulted in one martyr and several injuries, demands that the Lebanese state assume its full national responsibility. It must break out of the role of a helpless observer and move beyond issuing statements of condemnation, which have proven ineffective. The state must take serious, urgent, and effective action at all levels and by all available means.”
