The Council of Ministers appointed Karim Souaid as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, securing 17 out of 24 votes.
Who is Karim Souaid?
Born in Qartaba, Mount Lebanon, in 1964, Souaid studied banking law at Harvard Law School, focusing on financial regulations and market stability. He is a founding partner of Growthgate Capital, an asset management firm investing in the MENA region.
Souaid has extensive experience in banking regulations, capital markets, and privatization, working with financial institutions and governments across the Middle East. He previously served as General Manager of Investment Banking at HSBC, a board member at Emirates Lebanon Bank, and an advisor on public sector financial transactions.
In 2023, he launched a financial recovery study for Lebanon, led by Professor Ricardo Hausmann of Harvard’s Growth Lab.
