Agriculture Minister declares state of emergency in forest sector
In a bold move to confront mounting environmental threats, Agriculture Minister Nizar Hani declared a state of emergency in Lebanon’s forest sector, citing the urgent need to protect the country’s woodland resources.
The announcement is part of a national plan to safeguard forests and ensure their sustainability, through strict measures aimed at curbing illegal activities that accelerate deforestation and desertification.
Key actions include coordination with the Ministry of Defense to monitor illegal logging sites, with instructions to intervene immediately, and with the Ministry of Justice to expedite and toughen penalties against violators.
The ministry will also intensify field monitoring through a central coordination point with forest rangers and municipalities.
Among the emergency measures: halting pruning permits starting April 1, suspending charcoal production licenses from June 1, and reassessing agricultural development permits to align with sustainable practices.
Minister Hani urged public cooperation, stressing shared responsibility in preserving Lebanon’s forest heritage.
