The following is a statement by the High Representative on behalf of the EU on the presidential election:
The European Union warmly congratulates Joseph Aoun on his election as President of the Republic of Lebanon. This significant step marks a moment of hope and renewal for the Lebanese people.
We commend the Lebanese parliamentarians for reaching a broad consensus, demonstrating responsibility. A spirit of national unity is crucial to allow the participation of all citizens, across all components of society, to overcoming the aftermath of recent conflicts, advancing reconstruction efforts, and embarking on a path of political stabilisation and socio-economic recovery.
The EU reaffirms its steadfast support for the Lebanese people. We look forward to the swift formation of a fully-fledged government, able to take forward a reform-oriented and forward-looking agenda. This will pave the way for renewed international support and for the full relaunch of the EU-Lebanon Partnership.
