President Joseph Aoun and Mikati Discuss Local Challenges and Future Steps

  • Fri January 10 2025 11:40 am

Following his visit on Friday to Baabda Palace and meeting with President Joseph Aoun, Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed his pleasure in congratulating Aoun on his election, wishing for a successful and prosperous term for Lebanon.

Mikati highlighted the achievements of the government during its caretaker period, noting that in over two years since President Michel Aoun's term ended, 60 Cabinet meetings were held, issuing more than 1,200 decisions and 3,700 decrees. Our efforts were aimed at maintaining the functioning of the state and ensuring its continuity, Mikati said, emphasizing the crucial role of the Lebanese Army, led by General Joseph Aoun, in preserving stability.

During the meeting, Mikati and President Aoun also discussed challenges ahead and the goals set in the presidential oath speech.

The pair also addressed the situation in southern Lebanon, stressing the need for a swift and complete Israeli withdrawal, alongside restoring stability and halting Israeli violations.

Mikati further indicated that President Aoun requested the continuation of the caretaker government until a new one is formed, ideally in the shortest time possible.

Responding to a question regarding the government's composition and the role of the next Prime Minister, Mikati emphasized that it will be up to the president to decide once consultations are held.

Lebanon needs a government that can effectively implement the president's vision and work towards saving the nation, Mikati stated.

On political differences, including LF leader Samir Geagea’s stance on not nominating himself for the next government, Mikati reiterated his respect for all political opinions, noting that constitutional procedures will follow their due course.

Finally, Mikati addressed the president’s key priorities, such as the exclusive control of weapons by the state and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, stressing that the future government should focus on securing full state authority over all Lebanese territories, starting with southern Lebanon.
