French Armed Forces Minister: We are working to ensure that the ceasefire in southern Lebanon holds
French Minister of the Armed Forces, Sebastien Le Cornu, stressed on Tuesday the need for the fragile ceasefire in force in Lebanon since November 27 to hold.
Le Cornu told Agence France-Presse television during his visit to a UNIFIL base in the town of Deir Kifa in southern Lebanon: “This French-American mechanism has practically counted 300 violations, which means that it is performing its role fully.”
He added: We are halfway through this ceasefire, with first results recorded, especially in the ability to contain the conflict and ensure security.
He noted that with the expiration of the deadline set by the agreement, the Lebanese Armed Forces should have deployed in place of Hezbollah and where the Israeli forces are.
He considered that his visit is a starting point that allows planning for the remaining 26 days of a ceasefire that we realize is fragile, and inevitably requires the will of both sides.
“That is why we are doing everything we can to ensure that the ceasefire holds,” Le Cornu asserted.
