Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rahi called for a timely and fair presidential election in Lebanon, urging political leaders to act responsibly for the future of the country.
In his sermon on New Year's Day, Rahi underscored January 9 as a pivotal date, when Lebanon's Parliament is set to convene to elect a new President of the Republic. He expressed hope that the consultations would be successful and lead to the election of a leader who is both capable and suited to address Lebanon's current challenges.
The Patriarch emphasized that the election must take place without delay, warning that any postponement would result in the loss of trust from both the Lebanese people and the international community.
Beware of postponing the election for any reason, Rahi cautioned. If that happens—God forbid—the MPs will lose the trust of all Lebanese and the international community.
He further stressed that Lebanon should not be controlled by any individual or group.
Lebanon belongs to all its citizens, not just a faction, he asserted.
Rahi made it clear that the candidate who secures the required votes in accordance with Article 49 of the Lebanese Constitution will become the President of all Lebanese people, highlighting the need for a collective approach to the election.
Let us pray for the establishment of a just and lasting peace in our land, and for the election of a President on the ninth of this month who is worthy of the role and Lebanon’s greater good, Rahi concluded.
