Aoun follows up on regional tensions, electoral reform, and diaspora affairs
President of the Republic Joseph Aoun continued to closely monitor the escalating Israeli-Iranian tensions, receiving updates on ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further deterioration. He remained in contact with Lebanese security leadership, following up on measures agreed upon during last Saturday’s security meeting at Baabda Palace.
President Aoun also reviewed the government’s efforts to secure the return of Lebanese nationals stranded abroad due to flight cancellations and airspace closures triggered by regional instability.
In a meeting with Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab, discussions focused on electoral reform and challenges related to the current election law. Bou Saab noted diverging views on the mechanism for electing the six diaspora MPs and concerns about the unavailability of the electronic voting card, which may require legislative amendments.
Separately, President Aoun received a letter from Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel, congratulating him on his election and calling for stronger bilateral cooperation. Aoun conveyed his appreciation and praised Nepal’s contribution to UNIFIL.
Former MP Bahia Hariri also visited Aoun to present outcomes from a recent forum analyzing his presidential inauguration speech. Aoun commended the initiative for encouraging public engagement and supporting national unity.
Additionally, Aoun met with leaders of the Lebanese diaspora in Gabon, who reiterated their support and proposed direct MEA flights to strengthen ties. The President emphasized the vital role of expatriates in Lebanon’s economic revival and underscored ongoing efforts to restore national stability and investor confidence.
