Kataeb demands full ceasefire compliance, urges action on Hezbollah’s weapons

  • Wed April 2 2025 6:21 pm

The Kataeb Party’s Political Bureau held its weekly meeting under the leadership of party chief MP Samy Gemayel. After discussing the latest developments, the bureau issued the following statement:

1. The Kataeb Party expressed deep concern over the recent Israeli airstrikes that targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs twice in less than a week. The resumption of these attacks signals a dangerous return to instability, once again placing Lebanon at risk of war—something the Lebanese people had hoped was behind them.

The party also condemned the recent rocket launches from Lebanese territory, regardless of who is responsible. These reckless actions do nothing but drag the country backward, turning Lebanon once again into a bargaining chip for the so-called “resistance axis” to advance its regional agenda at the expense of national security. Such provocations are a deliberate attempt to destabilize Lebanon and cannot be tolerated.

Kataeb called for an immediate and total commitment to the ceasefire agreement by all parties involved—Israel, Hezbollah, and all armed factions—without exception. It also urged the Lebanese government and relevant authorities to take decisive measures to prevent further escalation, under any pretext.

While reaffirming its demand for Israel’s full and immediate withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the Kataeb Party also holds Hezbollah accountable for exposing Lebanon to grave danger by continuously defying the terms of the ceasefire agreement. The agreement was explicit: all weapons must be relinquished across Lebanese territory, with arms restricted solely to legitimate state institutions. Hezbollah voluntarily accepted these terms under military pressure and endorsed them through the previous government, with the current administration equally bound by this commitment.

As such, the Kataeb Party renewed its call for the Lebanese government to urgently address Hezbollah’s weapons. The issue must be placed on the government’s agenda without delay, with a clear and enforceable timeline to ensure full compliance with existing agreements.

2. With just days remaining before the first round of municipal elections, the Kataeb Political Bureau welcomed the Interior Minister’s formal announcement confirming that the elections will proceed as scheduled and urging voter participation.

The party remains firm in its stance that the elections must take place on time, without any postponement. While certain legal amendments may be necessary and beneficial, they must not, under any circumstances, serve as an excuse to delay this crucial democratic process.

3. As Lebanon prepares to mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Lebanese Resistance on April 13, the Kataeb Party reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to a sovereign and free Lebanon. This anniversary commemorates the start of Lebanon’s long struggle to liberate itself from all forms of occupation—a cause that remains central to the Kataeb Party’s mission.

To honor the occasion, the party will hold a special commemoration in tribute to its fallen martyrs—those who gave their lives for a fully sovereign and independent Lebanese state. Supporters and allies are invited to join the gathering in Ain El-Remmaneh on Saturday, April 12, to renew their pledge to Lebanon’s sovereignty and freedom.
