Salam: Reform, Justice, and National Progress at the Core of New Government Agenda

  • Mon March 3 2025 1:37 pm

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met with Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian at Dar Al-Fatwa, extending his well wishes for the holy month of Ramadan and expressing hopes for a period of prosperity and blessings for Lebanon, the Arab world, and the Muslim community.

According to a statement from Dar Al-Fatwa’s media office, the meeting included discussions on Lebanon’s overall situation.

Prime Minister Salam reaffirmed his government's commitment to launching an ambitious reform agenda following its vote of confidence. He emphasized that Lebanon would leverage its Arab and international relations to push for Israel’s withdrawal from all Lebanese territories, in accordance with the internationally recognized armistice agreement.

Salam stressed that strengthening state institutions remained at the core of his government's mission, assuring that citizens will witness a marked improvement in governance and services in the coming months.

Our primary concern is the well-being of the Lebanese people, alleviating their burdens, restoring Lebanon’s leading role, and fostering the best possible relations with Arab nations and friendly countries committed to Lebanon’s sovereignty, institutions, and people, he stated.

The Prime Minister also pledged focused attention on key national issues, particularly living conditions, water, electricity, infrastructure, and economic, social, and financial stability. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding depositors’ funds, ensuring justice in all cases, and appointing qualified individuals to vacant positions while preserving national balance and rights.

Addressing judicial concerns, Salam specifically highlighted the plight of detainees who have been held without trial for years, some of whom have already exceeded potential sentences.

The PM vowed to rectify this situation, particularly in the case of what is commonly referred to as Islamist detainees, asserting that justice must be served—punishing the guilty while releasing those wrongfully held.

For his part, Grand Mufti Derian wished the government and its prime minister success in their national mission, emphasizing that public expectations are high as the country awaits the implementation of the ministerial statement’s commitments.
