Agriculture Minister, US Ambassador broach sector challenges and reforms

  • Thu March 6 2025 12:09 pm

Minister of Agriculture Nizar Hani met with US Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson, with whom he discussed the ministry’s agricultural strategy and the challenges facing the sector.

Minister Hani outlined the key aspects of the strategy, which focuses on increasing agricultural production, improving quality, rehabilitating lands damaged by Israeli aggression, and enhancing agricultural extension programs to support farmers and promote sustainable development.

Ambassador Johnson emphasized the agricultural sector's vital role in ensuring food security, particularly concerning essential commodities and industrial crops. She noted that USAID programs in Lebanon are nearly at a standstill and highlighted the current absence of direct support for developmental sectors, including agriculture.

Despite these challenges, the ambassador expressed appreciation for the ministry’s efforts and voiced optimism about Lebanon’s future, stating that the U.S. administration hopes to see a more stable and transparent country.

Johnson also underscored that both Congress and the administration are closely monitoring Lebanon’s developments, hoping for the emergence of a modern state that ensures a dignified life for its citizens, which could encourage the return of expatriates and attract foreign investments.

At the conclusion of the visit, a symbolic cedar tree was presented in the ambassador’s name and planted in the Shouf Cedar Reserve, highlighting the importance of environmental cooperation and strengthening partnerships in environmental and developmental fields.
