MP Ibrahim Kanaan met with French presidential envoy Jacques de La Jugee and members of the French Embassy’s economic team to review Lebanon’s financial and economic situation and the progress of key reforms.
Discussions focused on amendments recently submitted by the government to the banking sector restructuring law at the request of the International Monetary Fund. The proposed changes are scheduled to be reviewed by the Finance and Budget Committee on Thursday.
Kanaan noted that the banking restructuring law was originally approved by Parliament on August 14, 2025, and stressed that the priority remains the adoption of a government recovery plan that protects depositors’ rights and is financially and operationally viable.
He emphasized that an agreement with the IMF is necessary, provided it safeguards rights and ensures transparency and accountability while facilitating the recovery of depositors’ funds and restoring confidence in Lebanon’s economy and financial sector.
