The Brazilian government has strongly deplored the attacks against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) carried out on June 3, 2026, which resulted in the death of a Serbian peacekeeper and injured two others. Ten Brazilian military personnel are currently serving within the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.
In a statement issued by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Brazil expressed its sincere condolences to the victim’s family and to the Government of Serbia, while wishing the injured personnel a swift and full recovery.
The statement noted that the growing number of attacks near UNIFIL positions is a cause for concern, highlighting that six other peacekeepers have been killed since the outbreak of the current hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah on March 2. It stressed that deliberate attacks against peacekeeping personnel and United Nations facilities are unacceptable and constitute serious violations of International Law, International Humanitarian Law, and United Nations Security Council resolutions, and may amount to war crimes.
Brazil reaffirmed its unequivocal commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and condemned the continued violations of the ceasefire by the parties, as well as Israel’s ongoing occupation of part of Lebanese territory.
In this context, Brazil called on Israel to fulfill its obligations and immediately withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon. It also urged all parties to fully comply with the provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), which established the ceasefire that ended the 2006 war, and to work toward an immediate cessation of hostilities, including the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.
The statement was issued by Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 8 under the title New Attacks Against UNIFIL.
