Bassil: Lebanon Is Not for Rent

  • Sat May 4 2024 1:40 pm

In a recent press conference, MP Gebran Bassil, leader of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) denounced the European offer of one billion euros in exchange for allowing displaced individuals to remain in Lebanon, characterizing it as an attempt to rent Lebanon and its people.

Bassil asserted that this proposal signifies a disguised and gradual displacement of Lebanese citizens under the guise of seasonal migration, with the potential for it to result in permanent migration. He emphasized the European Union's vested interest in Lebanon, suggesting that the offer may not be solely motivated by humanitarian concerns.

Highlighting the plight of Cyprus, Bassil pointed out the increasing migration of Syrian refugees from Lebanon to the island nation, which is struggling to cope with the influx. He underscored the importance of Lebanon acting in its own interest in addressing the refugee crisis.

Bassil reiterated the FPM's stance, emphasizing the need for a Lebanese political decision to repatriate the displaced individuals rather than accepting funding for their continued stay. He dismissed the efficacy of monetary assistance, asserting that what is truly needed is decisive action to facilitate the return of the displaced to their home countries.

Furthermore, Bassil announced the FPM's intention to introduce legislation aimed at repatriating the displaced, framing it as a legislative imperative. Additionally, he revealed plans to establish a parliamentary delegation to engage with officials and visit the European Union to deliver a memorandum outlining Lebanon's position on the matter.
